Why Are My Floors So Cold? The Problem May Be Under Your House

You turn up the thermostat.

The house feels warm.

But your feet are telling you a completely different story.

If your floors become noticeably cold when temperatures drop, the problem may not be your heating system.

It could be underneath your home.

Your Crawl Space Affects the Rooms Above It

The floor separating your living space from the crawl space is part of your home's building envelope.

If the crawl space is cold, drafty, damp, or poorly insulated, you're more likely to notice comfort problems upstairs.

Potential issues include:

  • Missing insulation

  • Sagging or damaged insulation

  • Open crawl space vents

  • Air leaks

  • Gaps around plumbing or wiring

  • Poorly sealed access doors

  • Excessive crawl space moisture

Insulation Doesn't Work Well When It's Hanging on the Ground

Take a peek into an older crawl space and there's a good chance you'll see fiberglass insulation hanging between the joists—or lying on the ground.

Once insulation is damaged, wet, compressed, or no longer properly positioned, it may not perform as intended.

Simply turning the thermostat higher doesn't correct the problem.

Moisture Can Make Things Worse

Cold floors and crawl space moisture often appear together.

A damp crawl space can also contribute to musty odors, mold, wood deterioration, and poor indoor air quality.

That's why we look at the whole crawl space, not just the insulation.

Should You Encapsulate?

Depending on the home's construction and existing conditions, solutions might include:

  • Crawl space encapsulation

  • Vapor barrier installation

  • Vent sealing

  • Dehumidification

  • Insulation improvements

  • Air sealing

  • Bandboard insulation

  • Crawl space access improvements

Every home is different, so the first step is figuring out exactly where you're losing comfort and why.

Get Ahead of Winter

If your floors were freezing last winter, don't wait until January to remember how much you hated it.

Fall is the perfect time to inspect your crawl space and make improvements before colder Maryland weather arrives.
