Back to School, Back Indoors: What’s Really in the Air Your Family Is Breathing?

Backpacks are packed, school buses are rolling again, and summer vacation is winding down.

As schedules return to normal and families begin spending more time indoors, September is a good time to think about something you can't necessarily see:

Your indoor air quality.

Indoor Air Problems Aren't Always Obvious

A home can look perfectly clean while still having an underlying moisture or mold issue.

Possible warning signs include:

  • Persistent musty odors

  • Visible mold or discoloration

  • Excess indoor humidity

  • Recent water damage

  • Recurring condensation

  • Allergy or respiratory irritation that seems worse indoors

The important thing is to determine what's causing the problem rather than guessing.

Where Can Mold Hide?

Mold can develop anywhere excess moisture is present, including:

  • Crawl spaces

  • Attics

  • Behind drywall

  • Around plumbing leaks

  • Beneath flooring

  • Near HVAC components

A moisture problem in an area you rarely see can sometimes go unnoticed for months.

What Does Air Sampling Tell You?

Professional air sampling can be one useful part of a mold investigation.

Samples can be collected from different areas of the home and analyzed by a laboratory to help evaluate the types and concentrations of mold spores present at the time of testing.

But air sampling shouldn't necessarily stand alone.

A thorough evaluation may also include a visual inspection, moisture readings, and investigation of potential water sources.

The goal isn't simply to get a number—it's to understand why there's a problem and what should be done about it.

Improve the Air by Addressing the Source

Depending on what we find, solutions may include:

  • Mold remediation

  • Moisture correction

  • Crawl space encapsulation

  • Dehumidification

  • Water damage restoration

  • Attic or insulation improvements

Covering a musty smell with an air freshener won't solve a moisture problem. Finding and correcting the source will.
